Dress, circa 1875-1884
The dress is made of a navy blue, most probably woolen fabric. This is a one-piece princesse-type dress. Decorations were made of the same fabric as the dress itself, using popular motifs such as pleated tapes and “connecting elements” at the front skirt.
The dress was made entirely by hand, which was a rarity in the 1870s, mostly due to the fact that sewing machines had been almost universally used since the 1840s.
This dress does not have a train. For that reason and you can classify it among the costumes representing the period of the late bustle. They were characterized by a narrow skirt and the decoration of the back clearly marked.
Original vintage dress.
